1. Bryggen
One of the top 10 things to do in Bregen is walking around the Bryggen neighborhood, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has remained almost unchanged since the 21st century. It is located right at the harbor and was the place where the first houses of the city were built. It is the very heart of Bregen and though a lot of the traditional buildings were burnt down in the fire of 1702, most of them have been completely restored to represent the initial style in which they were built.
2. Troldhaugen
Edvard Grieg, one of Norway’s famous music composers lived in Troldhaugen manor in the 19th century for more than 20 years. This is the place where he produced some of his best work. Right now the museum- houses as well as the adjacent beautiful garden are open for visitors who can see the elements of his life, such as old furniture, manuscripts and photos.
3. Floibanen Funicular
Bergen is located in the hills and travelling with the Floibanen funicular gives its guests an opportunity to appreciate a magic panoramic view of the city from the Floyen hilltop, located at the height of more than 300m. The funicular makes several stops along the way so people can disembark and enjoy a walk through the park located along the side of the hill. Not only is there a stunning view from the top, but the nature in that spot is absolutely magnificent.
4. Hanseatic Museum
Hanseatic Museum, built in the 19th century, is one of the oldest and most unique museums in Norway. It was founded by a Norwegian merchant, who wanted to honor the memory of the Hanseatic League of German merchants. Right now the museum is home to many original and old items such as beds with small doors, kitchen utensils and others that will transfer you to the 1700’s.
5. KODE Museum
Bergen Museum of Art, now known as the KODE Museum, is one of the most famous museums in Norway and visiting it is one of the top 10 things to do in Bregen. It consists of several separate buildings and is home to an impressive collection of both Norwegian and foreign artwork from the 13th to 20th centuries. Visitors can marvel at masterpieces by Edvard Munch, Harriet Backer, Max Ernst, Joan Miro, Vassiliy Kandinsky, Pablo Picasso and more.
6. Rosenkrantztarnet Tower
Rosenkrantz Tower is considered to be one of the most popular attractions in Bergen. It was built in the 13th century as an observation point to protect the city from enemies and a symbol of strength and power of the local authorities, who were the German Hanseatic merchants. Visitors can climb to the very top of the tower to enjoy the view of the city and the fjord.
7. Aquarium
Located South of Bergen, this aquarium is one of the oldest ones in Norway. It is home to numerous mammals and fish, including seals, penguins, snakes, crocodiles, and other underworld creatures. Spending a day here is a great idea especially for families with kids.
8. Gamlehaugen
Located near the Rosenkrantz Tower, Gamlehaugen is the Royal Palace and the official residence of King Harold of Bergen. From outside it resembles a Scottish castle and it is partially open for visitors with guided tours where you can learn a lot about the history of the city.
9. Fjords
Bergen is considered to be the gates to the Norwegian fjords and anyone who comes here must go on a voyage, for example a day tour, around the fjords, take joy in the surrounding nature and enjoy the views of the city from a different angle.
10. Fisketorget
One of the top 10 things to do in Bregen is going to the fish market, where visitors can try traditional fish soup, some of the best smoked salmon, grilled fillets or mussels that are cooked in huge woks, or even purchase fresh fish, crabs and prawns to cook themselves.
