Weather in Creta in January

Crete in January has the most unpredictable and rainy weather of the year. It is not the most favourable time on the island for visitors, because the sea is not calm, it is too cold to swim in and there are frequent strong winds. There are warm sunny days, but they are rather an exception. The temperature varies between 10 and 15°C. It is recommended to wear comfortable warm shoes, thick coats and hats, especially if you are planning on visiting mountain tops to marvel at the breathtaking sea views.

Crete in January feels rather deserted, and it is best to travel in big towns, such as Chania, Rethymnon and Heraklion, as the smaller ones are usually empty and everything is locked for the winter. One of the nice things to do in Crete in January is enjoy a romantic, idyllic getaway at a small hotel with a fireplace, or trying traditional Greek food in taverns hidden in the narrow picturesque streets, learning about traditions and experiencing the celebration of one of the most important Orthodox holidays – Epiphany, which is a massive event here.
