1. Frederiksborg Palace
This huge castle was the royal residence of the king of Denmark for almost 300 years, after which it was converted into a museum. The main building, built in Dutch Renaissance Style, exhibits a notable collection of different paintings and portraits. The baroque gardens surrounding the complex are extremely beautiful during the summer, when concerts are typically held along with other cultural events.
2. Bakken
With more than 400 years of history, Bakken qualifies itself as the world’s oldest amusement park. Today the park boosts several rides and six roller coasters (one of which opened in 1932!). It is located 10km far from Copenhagen, but this is often seen as an advantage because the area around Bakken features impressive lush vegetation where several red deer roam free.
3. The Little Mermaid
Many cities are known worldwide for their imposing statues (e.g. New York, Rio de Janeiro...). Copenhagen’s icon instead is a tiny bronze 1.25 tall statue located in the harbor which represents a fairy tale written by Hans Andersen.
4. National Museum of Denmark
Located in the Prince’s palace, the National Museum of Denmark encompasses a wide range of Danish history through its permanent and temporary exhibitions, often regarding objects from the Vikings era.
5. Church of Our Savior
The Church of Our Savior is one of the most beautiful churches in the world. It was built between the 17th - 18th centuries in a Baroque style and features a corkscrew spire. The over 400 stairs required to climb the spire to the top (90m) reward tourists with amazing views over Copenhagen.
6. Nyhavn
Nyhavn means ‘New Harbor’ in Danish but this typical neighborhood of Copenhagen boosts a long heritage. Buildings in Nyhavn are generally bars and townhouses built in the 17th century; these have been preserved and nowadays it is possible to enjoy a meal or coffee in one of the many picturesque restaurants and cafes of this neighborhood while watching historical wooden ships floating on the city canals.
7. Kronborg Castle
Kronborg is one of the most important castles in northern Europe, inscribed on the UNESCO list in 2000. The castle was built in the 16th century and it gained popularity thanks to Shakespeare’s play “Hamlet”.
8. Experimentarium
Being located 15 minutes far by bus from the city center, Experimentarium is sometimes skipped and thus not really popular. However, this attraction offers several experiments and challenges for people of every age. Children will absolutely love interacting with dinosaurs, inventions and water.
9. Strøget
Strøget is the largest shopping area in Denmark, a 1.1km long street with countless of shops, from the cheapest to the most expensive ones. Additionally, along this street are located many historical buildings and some of the best sights of the Danish capital.
10. Christiania
Christiana is one of the most visited attractions in Copenhagen and consists in a self-proclaimed ‘free’ neighborhood where more than 1000 people live. Christiana has its own rules, including a very tolerant policy regarding light drugs. Either you decide to go by yourself or as part of a guided tour, it is a great spot for watching an ‘alternative’ society.
