Weather in Crete in August

Crete in August is not the best destination to travel to. This is the hottest and driest month of the year, when the temperatures are set at about 30- 35°C and the sun is too strong between 11am and 5pm. It is advised to take care about spending time outdoors and keeping an eye on the children. What is mostly important is that this is the peak season, which means that the prices for everything are extremely high, hotels are usually overbooked and if you are looking for privacy, even travelling to the secluded Loutro will not guarantee a relaxing holiday. Greeks take their annual leave during the first 2 weeks of August, which means not only an influx of foreigners but also of locals to the islands.

That being said, if you are in Crete in August, make sure that you go there after the second week, when the mass of tourists leave and you can enjoy the great celebration held on the 15th of August, the Day of St. Mary. Every town holds a religious liturgy, and during the day massive festivals and markets take place on the main squares. Make sure to pay a visit to the Heraklion Festival of Arts, as well as the various gastronomic festivals in Rethymnon.
